Henri Cartier-Bresson

Having seen some Cartier-Bresson European images, I decided to look at pictures he took in the United States to see how he used his skills to capture American life.

1947 - New York
This image can be seen in several ways.  First, it seems to be "stacked" asymmetrically from left to right as the eye travels from river level, past the rail tracks, the highway and upward to the buildings in the upper right hand corner.  At the same time the roadway creates depth drawing the eye to the distant horizon.
The mysterious shadow falling across the upper third of the picture causes the viewer to wonder just what created it.   The viewer also has to wonder just how Cartier-Bresson achieved this view point.

1960 - Louisiana
In this composition Cartier-Bresson presents a social statement on life in the segregated South where African-Americans and whites lived side-by-side but were separated.  The white pole in the picture seems to symbolize the color barrier.  Except for the young black man in the lower part of the picture, no one is looking at anyone else.
The inclusion of the American flag with it's ideal of unity, provides a sad irony to the situation.

Final Project Proposal #2

2.  Farewell to Warder
Warder Nursery is about 40 acres in Springfield Township.  Originally acquired by the
Township to be a developed into a public park, the Township trustees have decided to
commercially developed the wooded area.  Public outcry to preserve the green space and
wildlife habitat has not been successful.  Recently, a sign was put up announcing that the
     project is moving forward.

This project will document the appearance of the green space with its large trees, ponds,
      walking path and wildlife.
Pictures will be taken at various times of day and in different light conditions.

     Shot list:
     Morning
     Trail
     Various trees, shrubs and wildflowers.

Final Project Proposal #1

1. Stocking the Pantry
The Mount Healthy Alliance Food Pantry provides food assistance to hundreds of persons living in
the 45231 area code.  As a "choice food pantry" those served are able to choose from
a well balanced array of items.   In order to do this, many people work behind the scenes to order
items from larger distribution centers, transport items to the Food Pantry, unload donations, screen
items for freshness dates, and place items on shelves and in refrigerators.

This photo essay will document the ongoing work of the volunteers and the behind the scenes
work that makes the Food Pantry possible.  Copies of the photos will be made available to
    the Pantry director.

     Shot list:
     Empty shelves and refrigerators.
     Setting up to receive shipments.
     Unloading shipments.
     Bagging donations.
     Checking freshness dates.
     Weighing and documenting donations.
     Stocking shelves and refrigerators.
Stocked shelves ready for clients to make their selections.
